Oxytocin

Oxytocin Acetate

Also known as: OT, Pitocin, Syntocinon, The Love Hormone

Overview

A naturally occurring nonapeptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. Beyond its well-known role in labor and lactation, oxytocin is increasingly studied for its effects on sexual function, pair bonding, social cognition, and emotional regulation.

Half-Life
3-5 minutes (IV); ~20-30 minutes (intranasal, sustained brain effects)
Typical Dose
10–40 IU
Frequency
as needed, 30-60 minutes before anticipated activity
Cycle Length
As needed; no established cycling protocol for off-label use

Administration

IntranasalSubcutaneousIntravenous

Benefits

  • Enhances sexual arousal and orgasm intensity in research settings
  • Promotes pair bonding and social connection
  • Anxiolytic effects and stress reduction
  • May improve trust, empathy, and emotional recognition
  • Supports postpartum bonding and lactation (established medical use)

Side Effects

  • Nasal irritation (intranasal route)
  • Headache
  • Mild nausea
  • Uterine contractions (significant at high IV doses)
  • Water retention/hyponatremia at high doses

Mechanism of Action

  • Binds oxytocin receptors (OXTR) in hypothalamic, limbic, and brainstem regions to modulate social and sexual behavior
  • Facilitates dopamine release in mesolimbic reward pathways during sexual activity and bonding
  • Reduces amygdala reactivity, lowering anxiety and social fear responses
  • Peripherally stimulates smooth muscle contraction in the uterus and myoepithelial cells in breast tissue

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy (risk of premature labor unless used for induction under medical supervision)
  • Significant cardiovascular disease
  • Known hypersensitivity to oxytocin

Storage & Reconstitution

Store at 2–8°C (36–46°F), protected from light. Do not freeze. Intranasal sprays: refrigerate after opening and use within 28 days.

Injectable oxytocin typically comes pre-mixed. For intranasal use, compounded nasal sprays are common. Lyophilized research-grade peptide should be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water.

Common peptide amounts:5 mg10 mg

Research Summary

Oxytocin has been FDA-approved for decades (Pitocin) for labor induction and postpartum hemorrhage. Research into its behavioral effects has expanded dramatically, with studies showing intranasal oxytocin enhances sexual arousal, orgasm satisfaction, and post-coital bonding in both sexes. Neuroimaging studies confirm increased activation in reward and social cognition networks. Clinical trials are exploring its potential in autism spectrum disorder, social anxiety, PTSD, and relationship therapy.
